Text of the story:

Landfill

Maria had found the dragon on the beach. It was a giant oarfish, of course. Dragon sounded more mysterious.

 A shimmering serpent-shape, the dying oarfish was beautiful.

The earthquake struck a week later. The landfill close to the beach spilled refuse into the sea. Maria knew the landfill too. She picked sweet tomatoes that grew from plastic bags.

The landfill was a mountain of plastics. Plastic bodies, plastic hearts.

Maria was sure the dragons would return.

People shouldn’t ignore such warnings.

One day the landfill would become a true garden where everyone could grow their fruits and vegetables.
